The following principles apply to the personally identifying information we ask for and that you provide. "Personally identifying information" is information that individually identifies you, such as your name, physical address or email address. The following policies are only in effect for the BK/Bits public hosting service, the BitKeeper configuration management system, the BK/DB database system, the web pages, and opt-in discussion and/or announcement lists owned and operated by BitMover, Inc.

What don't you do with the information you collect?

We do not, and will not, gift, rent, sell or resell your private information to other companies or individuals.

What information are you collecting and how are you collecting it?

We may collect information from users when they use our products. This information may include your email address, host/domain name, user name, and/or other information which uniquely identifies you to us. What we may collect varies across our products and/or services:

• BK/Bits: When you register a project on bkbits.net we collect an ssh key so that you may have a secure means of updating your repository hosted on bkbits.net. We may collect an email address for each project administrator as part of the project creation process.
• BitKeeper (all users): When you install BitKeeper we may send an installation log message.
• BitKeeper (commercial users): When you use BitKeeper to create changes we may send a log message to bitkeeper.com. The log message contains only enough information to record that you have used BitKeeper to make a change. It does not contain any checkin comments, pathnames, or anything else which could be used to determine what you are doing with BitKeeper.
• BK/DB (commercial users): Any information collection is identical to that collected by the BitKeeper configuration management system.

What do you do with the information you collect?

What we may do with your information varies across our products and/or services:

• BK/Bits: We use the information to notify you of any important information regarding the free hosting service, such as outages, upgrades, improved services, etc.
• BitKeeper (all users): We use the installation log messages to determine which platforms are popular and which may be safely depreciated. For example, we are currently (Fall 2004) looking at the information to determine whether Windows/98 could be safely removed as a supported platform.
• BitKeeper (commercial users): The log messages sent back are used to count seats for billing purposes. Because BitKeeper is a distributed system and because we never want licensing to get in the way of your productivity, we use this method to centralize the seat counting process. This process ensures that you are billed for what you use and no more, resulting in lower costs to you. While some people have concerns about this system, all of our customers, including many Fortune 50 companies, use this model and have verified that it does not include any intellectual property leak.
• BK/DB (commercial users): Any information collection is identical to that collected by the BitKeeper configuration management system.
• Opt-in mailing lists: Our mailing lists are managed by the mailman mailing list software. Any information you may post to those lists is by design available to anyone who wishes to see it.

Policy changes

Please note this Privacy Policy may change from time to time. We expect most such changes to be minor. Regardless, we will post those changes here and, if the changes are significant, we will also provide a more prominent notice to the bitkeeper-announce discussion list.
