Campbell, CA - October 21, 2007 -
BitMover, Inc., the leader in scalable distributed source code management,
today announced availability of BitKeeper 4.1, a major upgrade to its
powerful source code management tool suite, expanding platform options,
enhancing performance and embracing management of binary assets in
addition to traditional source code control.
New features in BitKeeper 4.1 include:
-
Binary Asset Management - BAM (see below)
-
Windows Vista support
-
Performance gains, especially for large repositories with large numbers
of change sets. For example, BitKeeper 4.1 cuts in half the time needed
to process the entire Linux 2.6 kernel tree with up 128,000 change sets.
BitKeeper 4.1 breaks down traditional barriers in SCM, redefining the scope of source management,
commented Larry McVoy, BitMover CEO.
It accommodates the complexity of today's distributed development
environments - only BitKeeper lets developers manage and track source
code and binary assets, across diverse distributed platforms, with
sizzling performance.
Binary Asset Management - BAM
Traditional source code management tools operate on sets of text files
containing programming source code, documentation and other textual
information. Real world development of software, hardware and other
technical endeavors also demands storage and revisioning of assets in
binary form, including executables, graphics, and multimedia. BitKeeper
4.1 offers developers and integrators a new capability for managing
binary assets - BAM.
While the benefits of distributed source management systems (DSCM), such as
enhanced productivity through workflow, are becoming
well understood, DSCM also posed a challenge for large binary collections.
Replicating the history for 10GB of binaries proved cumbersome.
BAM solves this problem with a hybrid approach. BAM adds the concept of
one or more BAM servers. Each BAM server contain all BAM data, but
clones of the server (work spaces) contain only that data that the user
requests. Typically this is the most recent version of each binary but
in some cases it may even be less than that.
There may be multiple BAM servers, for multi site installations. For example,
if there are development groups in the US, India, and the UK, each of those
countries would have a BAM server. Local users would get their BAM data
from the closest BAM server.
BAM has been successfully deployed in the game development space with great
success.
Game developers continue to enjoy the benefits of distributed work flow
without the penalty of carrying all versions in every workspace.
